Hypnosis Demystified: Three Myths You Can Let Go Of
Last Sunday was World Hypnotism Day – yes, there really is a day for everything.
Each year, it’s a chance for professional hypnotherapists to do a bit of myth-busting around hypnosis. So here are my top three hypnosis myths… busted.
1. The hypnotist is controlling your mind
FALSE. Wouldn’t that be great? I’d be off robbing banks — “You’ve forgotten you emptied the safe and handed me all the money” — or all those rows with my kids about unfinished homework would never have happened. “You will do your homework after you’ve washed up.” Imagine.
The truth is, I can’t control your mind, no matter how convincing that stage hypnosis show looked. Hypnotherapy is a collaboration. You and I working together to achieve your goals.
2. Hypnosis isn’t natural
FALSE. We drift in and out of hypnosis around 120 times a day on average. Ever lose track while reading a boring email? Or arrive somewhere in the car with no memory of the journey? That’s hypnosis.
Even finding your car in a car park relies on a hypnotic process — your mind searching memory for where you left it. Useful, isn’t it?
3. The hypnotist can wipe your mind
No matter how much you’d love to forget your ex, your memories stay intact — the good and the bad. You’ll also remember what happens in your session. There’s no strange memory loss involved.
Hypnosis doesn’t take anything away from you. It simply helps you use your mind more effectively.
