The Hidden Signs of Stress You Shouldn’t Ignore

April is Stress Awareness Month, and this year’s theme, #BeTheChange, is about raising awareness, reducing stress in your own life, and influencing the world around you.

The reality is stark. 1 in 4 workers say they feel unable to cope with stress at work (1), and nearly 91% have experienced high pressure in the past year. (2) Signs of burnout — exhaustion, detachment, and reduced effectiveness — are now affecting more than half of the workforce.

You might notice it as poor sleep, constant overthinking, irritability, headaches, muscle tension, or feeling overwhelmed by even simple tasks. For some, it’s anxiety, low mood, or that sense of being permanently “on edge”. Left unchecked, it can build to unmanageable levels.

I’m seeing more of this in my clients — particularly those we were applauding during Covid. NHS staff and teachers are being stretched by insufficient staffing, bureacracy and working with challenging people. But it’s not limited to public services. Business owners are feeling the weight of responsibility, while others feel stuck — bogged down by red tape or terrible bosses.

And of course, stress isn’t always about work. It can come from caring for a loved one, relationship breakdown, moving house, financial pressure, or life simply piling up all at once. Different causes, same impact — that feeling of being stretched too far for too long.

Stress Awareness Month is led by the Stress Management Society, who offer a range of practical tools, including their 30-day challenge. Some of the ideas may seem small, but small changes, done consistently, can shift how you feel more than you might expect.

If stress is still lingering — whether it’s affecting your sleep, your focus, or your sense of calm — hypnotherapy can help. It works by calming the nervous system, easing anxiety, and reducing that cycle of overwhelm and overthinking.

Consultations are free and confidential, and you can book yours online here.

Common Therapies

I’m often asked what can hypnotherapy be used to treat and it’s such a difficult question to answer because the answer is just about anything where the subconscious is involved. Sometimes whatever that is doesn’t have an obvious connection to the subconscious so if you’re wondering if hypnotherapy can help you, the answer is most likely yes!

I’ve given a little more detail on some of the more common things I work with, however this is not an exhaustive list by any means. Feel free to contact me to find out how hypnotherapy can help you.
