My personal experience of diets (and why I hate them so!)
So here’s a thing. This time last year I was on day 5 of a 5 day medically prescribed diet ahead of a little procedure in hospital tomorrow. (If you know, you know 😬🤢). Said diet is forever after to be referred to as The Misery Diet.
Here’s the things that I’ve always said about diets but have been feeling very keenly myself the last few days:
-
I am grumpy…boy, am I grumpy!
-
I am obsessing about food. I’ve already planned what I’ll eat tomorrow night when I’m finally released.
-
I am craving food. Tell someone they can’t eat something and it’s all you can think about.
-
I have food envy. It’s horrible watching someone else tuck into a delicious meal that you’re “not allowed” especially if you have cooked that meal yourself.
- I am hungrier than normal. This constant thinking about food combined with not eating a balanced diet is messing up the signals from my sub-conscious telling me whether I’m actually hungry or not.
If that’s what I’m like after 5 days, what’s it been like for you if you’ve been on a diet for as long as you can remember?
I’ve seen clients in their 40s, 50s, 60s and beyond that have been dieting since their teenage years. A lifetime of diets and for what? Misery and self-loathing? 💔

And finally, whatever criticism you may have for the NHS at the moment, I only have admiration for them at the moment - seen the same day, test results within 24 hours and booked into hospital within 2 weeks. 🙏🏻
