The Paradox of Fear in Air Travel: How Rare Disasters Amplify Anxiety
Air travel is statistically one of the safest modes of transportation, yet the fear of flying, or aviophobia, affects a significant portion of the population. In the United Kingdom, there has not been a fatal accident involving a commercial airline since 1989, underscoring the high safety standards maintained within UK airspace.
The Impact of Media Coverage on Fear of Flying
Despite the remarkable safety record, media coverage of rare aviation disasters can profoundly impact public perception and heighten anxiety. High-profile incidents, such as the American Airlines crash in Washington in January, have understandably raised safety concerns among the public. A recent AP-NORC poll revealed that following that plane crash, Americans’ confidence in air travel safety decreased from 71% to 64%, and those considering air travel unsafe increased from 12% to about 20%. This phenomenon, where isolated events receive extensive media attention, can distort perceptions of risk, leading individuals to overestimate the likelihood of such incidents.
Understanding the Statistics: The Reality of Air Travel Safety
To contextualise the safety of air travel, consider that between 2018 and 2022, the risk of fatality per boarding was one in every 13.7 million, a significant improvement from earlier years. This means that the probability of being involved in a fatal air accident is exceedingly low, especially when compared to other forms of transportation. The odds of being struck by lightning is less than one in 1 million or winning the lottery is one in every 4 million.

How Hypnotherapy Can Help Overcome Fear of Flying
For those grappling with aviophobia, hypnotherapy offers a path to relief. Hypnotherapy is used to tackle the root cause of the fear, reframe negative associations with flying and provide techniques to support you when flying.
While media reports of air disasters can amplify fears disproportionately, most people with a fear of flying understand consciously that there is very little risk involved with flying. In fact, I’ve found that people with this fear are very well informed regarding the risks! Hypnotherapy can tackle the subconscious feelings so that you can travel with confidence.
